Completing Your Education Section on Upwork

Let’s continue building your profile on Upwork, shall we?

So far, you’ve already filled out your (1) Expertise, and (2) Expertise Level.

Now what?

Let’s move on to…

3) Education

Here’s what you’ll see:

Upwork Education Experience

You have two options here:

1. You can click “Add Education” and fill out the details, or
2. You can skip the section altogether and come back to it later.

Now, because Upwork is so competitive right now with new freelancers, it might be in your best interest to fill this out. I think the more complete your profile, the more chances you’ll have at getting it approved.

But I could be wrong…

However, if (or when) you do fill this out, here’s something to keep in mind:

When you’re adding your education, try to frame it in a way that mentions your ‘skills’ as a freelancer.

For example…

Let’s say you’re applying to be a writer and you add a Sales & Marketing diploma program to your Education. In the “Optional Description” section, you could list different subjects or courses that related to that skill.

You could say…

“In this program, I took the following courses…

— Business writing
— Proposal writing
— Sales writing
— Writing for the web
— and so on…”

What this does is help your profile stand out as a ‘writing’ profile.

You’re basically adding keywords that match what people are searching for — meaning when people search for those specific keywords, your profile is more likely to show up.

If you want to take this a step further, ask yourself:

“What words might someone use when searching for a freelancer?”

They’re not just looking for “a writer” — they’re looking for “a blog writer to write health and beauty articles.” Can you see the difference there?

Specificity is your friend here.

So if you can think of exact ‘keywords’ people might be searching for, find a way to sprinkle them throughout your profile. This will give a better chance at being found — and the Education section is a great place to do this.
