How ‘Rigid Flexibility’ Helps Me Get the Most Out of Life
It seems counterintuitive, but it’s true
It’s funny.
I find my life becomes more flexible the more structured I make it — I like to call it ‘Rigid Flexibility.’ It’s a very counterintuitive premise, but time and again I’ve found it to be true.
For the past 3 years, I’ve been learning how to work from home. And not only that, but also how to work around a young and growing family.
At times, it’s proven to be challenging, no doubt. But far more often, it’s rewarding, empowering, and something I would never give up.
I’m used to it now, but that didn’t happen overnight.
What I’ve found most helpful is creating a schedule for myself. And as long as I stick to that schedule, everything that needs to get done… gets done. Simple as that.
The best part? Everything on my schedule is moveable. Meaning, if I want to go to the beach instead of work, I simply move that chunk of my schedule to somewhere else. That way, I know it’s still getting done. This is what creates the flexibility.
For example…
Between 1:00 pm — 4:00 pm, my schedule says to work on client projects. Great. That means, on most days, this is what I’m doing around that time.
BUT — if I look out my window and see my daughter playing in our yard and feel compelled to join her… I do that instead. All I do is take that 3-hour ‘chunk’ and move it somewhere else.
Voila — work still gets done and I carry on getting the most out of life. Rigid flexibility for the win.
It’s been a brilliant strategy for me thus far. And I suspect if you try it out, it will be a brilliant strategy for you, too.
Anyway, that’s it for now.
If you want some help putting together a schedule like this, hit me up and I’d be happy to help you do it.
Halt right there!
