Michael Jordan’s Best Kept Mindset Secret
This lesson will radically change everything you do
Lately my wife and I have been watching The Last Dance.
It’s a documentary miniseries about the career of Michael Jordan, with particular focus on the 1997–98 Chicago Bulls season.
Neither my wife or myself watch any basketball (or any sports, really), but we decided to hop on the bandwagon to see what all the fuss was about…
… and I’ve gotta say, I’m happy we did.
When I was growing up, Michael Jordan was a household name. He was as celebrity as celebrity gets, and without a doubt the most popular person in the world at the time.
Then Space Jam happened — which was arguably cinema’s finest moment — and launched his already lustrous career to near stratospheric heights.
He was everywhere, and everyone on the planet knew his name.
That’s why The Last Dance is so inviting.
It’s this rare opportunity to peek behind the curtain and see what a cultural icon was really like — scars, idiosyncrasies, bad habits and all.
And despite his personal character being nothing like I would have expected (harsh, mean, bullying teammates, etc) — you can’t deny that his mentality was always that of a winner and a champion. If you weren’t there to win, you had no right standing next to him, and he wasn’t afraid to let you know it.
But beyond this “win-or-die” attitude, he had a unique way of looking at his obligation to perform that’s made a radical impact on my life.
It’s a lesson I think anyone can benefit from — especially those who struggle to “show up” and consistently do their best. The moment I integrated it, I had one of the biggest “Aha” moments of my life — and I have no doubt it’s a lesson that’ll shape everything I do in my career moving forward.
Once you find out what it is, I suspect it’ll do the same for you.
Unfortunately, though, I’m out of time for the day — so you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to learn about it.
In the meantime, go watch The Last Dance if you haven’t already.
You won’t be disappointed.
Halt right there!
