Stop and Chat Be Damned

You know what I’m talking about

You know all about it.

You’re with friends.

You’re with family.

You’re all by yourself just putterin’ around.

All of a sudden, a familiar face.

Your heart sinks a little.

“Not today,” you think to yourself.

You feel compelled to run away.

You turn your head ever so slightly to avoid any interactions or eye contact.

You peek again.

“Dammit, they saw me.”

Stop and chat engaged.

I had one of those today.

Sometimes, I’m into it.

But most of the time, I could do without.

They’re always long and drawn out and pointless.

No one ever seems to know when to stop.

You start walking away and suddenly they’re talking about something else.

Ugh.

Just let me leave goddammit!

But they never let you leave comfortably, do they?

It’s like a handshake that goes on for too long.

You’re limp and ready to release while the other keeps shaking away.

How do some people have so much to talk about?

And why do they have to save it all for a brief stop and chat?

I know you know what I’m saying.

And I know you know how I feel.

But here’s the thing…

You might be a stop-and-chatter yourself and not even know it.

Most of them are.

So check yourself.

Ask yourself if it’s really necessary.

Perhaps a simple “Hey, it’s great to see you!” will do.

Ain’t nobody got time to stop and chat with everybody they see.

Most of us have better things to do — even if that’s nothing at all.

So do your part to make a difference.

Stop and chat be damned.

Agree?

Halt right there!
