What happens when you don’t edit as you write?
It’s a great question.
It’s also a great habit to get into.
When I first started writing, I would always edit as I went. I would make sure every sentence was perfect before moving on to the next. Heck, I still do it most of the time.
But real pros don’t edit as they write.
They edit after they’ve got everything on the page.
That’s what I’m trying to do now.
I’m not touching anything I’ve already written.
This is one flowing piece straight ’til the end.
I haven’t reworked any sentences.
I haven’t read over what I’ve already written.
I’m just going with the flow and seeing what happens.
It’s liberating, really — to not have to worry about making everything perfect. I can see why this is such a smart and ‘free’ way to write.
Instead of massaging everything as you go...
You get it down on the page first and then start sculpting it into something you’re proud of.
In some cases, you even end up with something that doesn’t need to be edited at all.

I haven’t looked back to edit anything yet.
And here I am at 200 words — in no longer than 5 minutes, too.
