When Self-Discipline Fails
And exactly what to do about it
Did you fall off track?
Did you make good progress on something only to stop and have trouble starting again?
Did you break a commitment to yourself?
Did you break a promise to yourself?
Did you do something you said you weren’t going to do?
Yea — self-discipline can be a real SOB sometimes.
I’ve been there.
In fact, I’ve been there more times than I care to admit. I’ll be the first to say I have trouble living up to my own expectations.
But what I’ve learned is that it’s never the end — you’re never done trying to improve and better yourself.
Sure, you might fail.
Sure, you might fall.
Sure, you might lose progress and land right where you started.
But it’s not your fault.
You’re human.
I’m human.
And for many of us, self-discipline is just… hard.
We’re not used to it. We’re not accustomed to it. We’re not bred to push ourselves faster and farther each passing day.
Some are, but that’s not me.
And if you’re reading this, I have a good feeling that’s not you, either.
You’re going to fail — I’m going to fail.
We’re going to fall off track and fall behind.
But as long as we get up, dust ourselves off, and continue marching forward, we’ll always get to where we want to go.
Nothing can stop a person with persistence.
So the next time you get down on yourself for a lack of progress or effort, remember these three powerful and simple sentences:
This isn’t the end.
You can always start again.
You will make it if you decide to keep going.
Of that, I’m certain.
Halt right there!
