Why You Must NEVER Share Your Goals With Anyone

You’ll be better off because of it

The other day, I was catching up with a colleague of mine.

Just shootin’ the shit. How are things. That typa thing.

Then they asked me:

“So, have you set any goals for yourself this year?”

To which I replied:

“Of course! Big, big plans for 2021.”

Intrigued, they wanted to know more.

“Oh yea? What big goals have you set for yourself?”

“Well, one of them is actually to stop sharing my goals altogether.”

“That’s interesting. Why’s that?”

“Well, here’s the thing about sharing your goals. Unless you’re sharing them with a mentor or a friend who’s ALWAYS rooting for you… chances are, you’re probably just opening the doors for unwanted criticism.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Well, think about it this way. Whenever you share your goals with someone, there’s usually 1 of 2 things that can happen. (1) They’re excited for you, and they applaud and support your decision. Or (2) They don’t actually think you can do it and either say it through their words or actions.”

I could tell that wasn’t enough for them, so I continued.

“Of course, if someone’s supportive of you, then that’s great. But if they’re not? Why invite that kind of negativity into your life? Why let them rain on your parade? Who really cares what they think? All their negativity does is give YOU doubt about what YOU want to accomplish. If you don’t share your goals, you never have to deal with that in the first place. It’s a win-win, in my opinion.”

And that’s exactly what YOU should be doing, as well.

Unless you KNOW the person you’re sharing your goals with is going to be supportive of you, don’t do it.

Keep them to yourself and go after them all the same.

Prove to people through your ACTIONS that you can make your dreams come true. No one has to know what you’re trying to accomplish beforehand.

If they do, they may just throw some negativity your way. And the teeniest tiniest bit of that shit can throw you completely off your game.

But if you never share your goals with anyone, that’ll never happen anyway.

And that’s a much MUCH better way for your goals to survive and THRIVE.
